Survey On Mt. Peter Hawk Watch & Pochuck Mt. Land Use

The NYS DEC has been preparing Unit Management Plans (UMPs) since at least the early 1980s for public lands managed by the Department. The New England-West area has never before been the subject of a UMP. It comprises several State Forests and Multiple Use Areas in Orange and Ulster Counties.

The UMP’s will be developed in compliance with the "Strategic Plan for State Forest Management”. This Strategic Plan has five overall goals as follows:

  • Provide healthy and biologically diverse ecosystems.
  • Maintain human-made forest assets for people.
  • Provide recreational opportunities for people of all ages and abilities.
  • Provide economic benefits to the people of New York State.
  • Provide a legal framework for forest conservation and sustainable management of State Forests.

Pochuck Mountain and Mt. Peter Hawk Watch have never been the subject of a UMP. DEC is looking for local input on ways in which residents can better use these two areas in line with the five goals.

Your input is extremely important to this process. This input must be received, by the DEC, by December 9, 2016.

Thank you for your support.
