WEEK OF JUNE 29, 2008
This week we celebrate the 232nd birthday of our nation. On the occasion of President Washington's birthday in 1861, President Lincoln pointed to Independence Hall before which he stood and said "I have never had a political feeling that did not spring from sentiments embodied in the Declaration of Independence." In today's political climate the cynic would say politician Lincoln was indulging in rhetorical excess or worse, pandering. In 1861, however, and in fact throughout his career, President Lincoln used common sense and plain talk to reach those he met on the stump. That February day in 1861, standing before Independence Hall, Lincoln spoke from his heart when he referred to being guided by the Declaration of Independence. The Constitution was, at the time, invoked more often by politicians because it was the framework for our laws and government. It was the Declaration of Independence, however, that offered hope to the world that all peoples are by right and ought to be free! President Lincoln understood that because of the Declaration of Independence, the United States stood as a symbol to all that freedom is obtainable for those who are willing to seek it. I wish everyone a wonderful Fourth of July, full of enjoyment and celebration for the greatest country in the world. The Thomas P. Morahan Waterfront Park will be home to fireworks on the lake this Saturday, July 5th. Come enjoy the fun! The next regular meeting of the Town Board will be held on Thursday, July 17th, 2008 at 7:30 pm in the Warwick Town Hall , 132 Kings Highway .
